A produção de cana de açúcar em 2020 foi estimada em 677,9 milhões de toneladas pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) no terceiro prognóstico para a safra. Uma queda de 1,8% em relação ao levantamento do mês anterior.
O rendimento médio dos canaviais caiu 1,2%. Em relação ao ano de 2019, as estimativas de produção apresentam acréscimo de 1,6%, com queda de 0,3% na área destinada à colheita e aumento de 1,9% no rendimento médio.
O Mato Grosso do Sul, quarto maior produtor nacional da cana (7,1% do total), apresentou a principal variação na produção em dezembro com uma redução de 22,4%, efeito da queda de produtividade dos canaviais atingidos pela falta de chuvas. Mas São Paulo, o maior produtor (52,0% do total) teve um crescimento de 2,7% na produção em relação a 2019.
